Knitting in Québec and Aboard The Canadian train - With ARNE & CARLOS

Welcome to The Canadian Knitting adventure with ARNE & CARLOS!

We are delighted to invite you to travel across Canada in the company of ARNE & CARLOS, with knitting, conversation, and discovery woven into every step of the journey!

The tour begins in Québec City, chosen by ARNE & CARLOS for its beauty and its European character — unlike anywhere else in North America. We will spend two days here, with time to wander the cobbled streets, enjoy the old-world atmosphere, and share moments for knitting and conversation in the unique setting of the five-star Château Frontenac. From there, the journey continues with a flight to Toronto — a lively, multicultural city with its own creative energy. We will have time here to explore, sample Canadian flavours, and prepare for the highlight of the tour: boarding The Canadian, the legendary train that crosses the country.

For four days, The Canadian will be transformed into “The Knitting Train,” carrying travellers across wide prairies, endless forests, and into the heart of the Rockies. As the scenery shifts from open plains to towering mountains, travellers will take part in a knit along created especially for this journey by ARNE & CARLOS. Along the way, there will be knitting, storytelling, and the companionship of those who share the same passion and love for the craft.

The final stop is Vancouver, framed by ocean and mountains. Two days here provide a balance of urban life and natural beauty, including a visit to Vancouver Island. ARNE & CARLOS have been there once before and remember it as a peaceful place that felt much like Norway — only with taller trees. It is a beautiful and relaxing landscape, with the famous Butchart Gardens as its crown.

Crossing Canada by train is a bucket list experience — and this journey makes it even more special, with ARNE & CARLOS and the joy of knitting at its heart!

Highlights:

  • The charm of Québec City, with three nights at the iconic Château Frontenac
  • The bustling, multicultural atmosphere of Toronto
  • The Canadian train – one of the great rail journeys of the world, travelling across five provinces, from forests and lakes through the wide prairies and into the dramatic Rocky Mountains
  • The majestic landscapes of the Rockies
  • The beauty of Vancouver, set on the Pacific Coast
  • A visit to the celebrated Butchart Gardens on Vancouver Island – one of the most celebrated botanical gardens

After breakfast, we set out on a guided walk through Old Québec, beginning directly from our hotel. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is a place of cobblestones, alleys and turrets, each carrying its share of history. With a local guide, we explore Lower Town, Battlefields Park, the Citadel, Place Royale and the city gates of Upper Town. Lunch is Québec’s familiar dish, poutine. The rest of the day is free to enjoy at your own pace.

Day 3        Yarn Inspiration & An Evening with ARNE & CARLOS                       9 Apr 2026 (B, L)

The morning is dedicated to a curated VIP visit at Les Laines Biscotte, exclusively arranged for our group. Guests are invited to explore Biscotte’s beautiful hand-dyed yarns, along with an extensive and inspiring selection of other yarns. This is a private, hosted experience designed to offer inspiration and insight in a relaxed setting.

Afterwards, we enjoy a traditional sugar shack lunch — a classic maple-season meal served in a countryside cabin, featuring simple, hearty dishes celebrating Québec’s maple heritage.

The afternoon is free. Guests who wish to continue their yarn explorations may visit other local wool shops independently. We recommend Madolaine and Fibre et Caféine.

In the evening, join ARNE & CARLOS and Les Laines Biscotte for An Evening with ARNE & CARLOS at the Hotel Château Frontenac. Hosted by Les Laines Biscotte, the evening includes a lecture and shared time together in a warm, creative atmosphere. The event is open to a wider audience, offering a wonderful opportunity to meet local knitters as well as guests travelling from near and far.

Day 4        Québec City to Toronto       10 Apr 2026 (B, D)

Specially arranged for our group, the visit includes demonstrations and unique elements created exclusively for this occasion, with the hosts guiding us through the experience.

Lunch is included, followed by a free afternoon for independent exploration and sightseeing in Toronto.

In the evening, we gather for Sit and Knit for a Bit Live with ARNE & CARLOS, hosted in collaboration with the Toronto Knitting Guild. This event is open to a wider audience and offers a lively opportunity to meet local knitters and other participants joining for the evening. Further details will be shared closer to the date.

Day 6 - 9       The Canadian Train Toronto - Vancouver 12 - 16  Apr 2026  (B, L, D)

Early in the morning, after breakfast, we board The Canadian at Toronto’s Union Station. Large luggage may be checked in at the station, we recommend a small carry on for the train journey, since space is limited on the train. Over the next four days, the train carries us across five provinces — past forests and lakes, through the wide prairies, and into the dramatic Rocky Mountains.

During these days, the train becomes our Knitting Train - but we will of course share the train with other travellers. We can look forward to spending time together in the observation car — knitting, sharing stories, and enjoying each other’s company as the landscapes unfold outside the windows. The steady rhythm of the journey invites us to slow down and savour the experience.

After four days, we reach the Pacific Coast and arrive in Vancouver.

Day 10       Arrival in Vancouver      16 Apr 2026 (B)

We arrive on the Pacific Coast and check into our downtown hotel. The evening is free.

Day 11       Vancouver Island and Butchart Gardens     17 Apr 2026 (B, L)

A full-day excursion takes us by bus and ferry to Vancouver Island, where the coastline is wild and the forests are deep. In Victoria, we visit the celebrated Butchart Gardens, taste local cider and enjoy lunch in a nearby restaurant. By early evening we return to Vancouver, with the night at leisure.

Day 12      Discover Vancouver    18 Apr 2026 (B, D)

This morning we explore Vancouver, including Stanley Park with its totem poles, English Bay, Robson Street, Canada Place, the Cruise Ship Pier, Gastown and Chinatown. On Granville Island there is time to visit local yarn shops such as Maiwa, the Silk Weaving Studio and Inkary Canada. The afternoon is free before we gather for a farewell dinner at a local restaurant.

Day 13      Vancouver - end of tour    19 Apr 2026 (B)

After breakfast, we check out and say our farewells before continuing onward (own arrangement).

The Canadian Train

The Canadian Train

The Canadian is more than just a train journey — it is one of the great rail journeys of the world. Travelling between Toronto and Vancouver, it covers nearly 4,500 kilometers in four days and four nights. It is a slow and graceful way to experience the vastness of Canada: forests, lakes, mountains, prairies, and sky that seems endless.

From a glass-domed observation car, you can sip coffee or wine while the countryside passes by in unhurried rhythm. The Canadian does not rush. It moves with the land itself, inviting you to set aside urgency and simply watch. Whether in the quiet of a sleeper cabin, or under the stars at midnight in the dome, the journey recalls an earlier age of train travel — yet it feels timeless.

Meals on board are part of the experience. In the dining car, tables are set with white cloths, and meals are served with care — often praised for their quality. Much of the day is spent in the glass-domed observation car, where we can knit, read, or simply watch the scenery unfold mile after mile.

Berths
Available for single use or shared between two. Each car has upper and lower berths, separated by a curtain at night. Toilets are located in the corridor, and showers are shared at the end of the car. During the day, attendants transform the berths into a seating area with a sofa. Many travellers find the berths surprisingly comfortable, with generous bedding and space to stretch out. They also offer a more social atmosphere, making it easy to meet fellow passengers along the way.

Cabins
Cabins are compact but comfortable, designed with both privacy and practicality in mind. Each has a private bed, sink, and toilet. During the day, the bunks are converted into chairs, giving space to sit and relax. Bedding is generous, and many passengers appreciate the balance of privacy and comfort these cabins provide.

Showers
Showers are shared at the end of the car — always clean, surprisingly roomy, and well maintained — and for most passengers it soon becomes part of the gentle rhythm of life on the train.
