Knitting Through the Heart of European Christmas with ARNE & CARLOS, November 30 to December 10, 2026

Along the Danube, December settles in early and stays. The days grow short, the sky closes in, and the light — what there is of it — arrives low and golden across the water before disappearing again by mid-afternoon.

In Scandinavia, where we live, darkness is not something to endure but something to answer. Candles appear in windows. Wreaths are hung on doors. On the thirteenth of December, Lucia comes — a procession of light moving through the darkest days of the year, white-dressed, singing, carrying flames through the cold. It is one of the most beautiful things we know, and it speaks to something very old and very true: that the human response to darkness is not to retreat from it, but to fill it with light.

Christmas, for us, has always been this. Not just the day itself, but the whole of Advent — the weeks of quiet anticipation that lead toward it, each one bringing the moment closer. The first of December arrives and something lifts. The house begins to change. Decorations appear, unwrapped one by one, each with its own small memory attached. New ones are considered, chosen, added to the collection. Candles are placed in windows. The smell of pine and candlewax and something baking fills the rooms slowly, day by day. We never tire of any of it.

Much of what we now call Christmas was born in this part of the world. The advent wreath, the market in the town square, the decorated tree — German in origin, carried outward from here across the world and onto every continent by the 19th century. It all began in this same darkness, in this same candlelight, in these cities along this river. The markets of Budapest, Bratislava, Vienna, Linz, Passau and Munich have been opening in the same squares for centuries. A man carves wooden ornaments at a small table. Somewhere nearby a choir is singing. The smell of cinnamon drifts between the stalls, mingling with roasted almonds and warm wine. People stand together in the cold, hands wrapped around cups of Glühwein, breath rising in the night air. The lights are everywhere — strung between buildings, reflected in the cobblestones, glowing against the dark sky — and the darkness, rather than something to resist, becomes the frame around all of it.

Christmas is also about the people you share it with. The gifts chosen with care, the time given freely, the warmth that this season insists upon. In our group, that warmth takes one more form: we will be knitting together, one Christmas ball for each day of the journey, as the river carries us slowly westward through the heart of European Christmas.

This year marks the fifteenth anniversary of our Christmas Balls book. It felt like exactly the right moment — finally — to make this journey for the first time.

Highlights:

  • Two days in Budapest before the cruise begins, with a behind-the-scenes visit to the Hungarian State Opera House and the Museum of Ethnography, where Hungarian embroidery and folk art traditions come to life.
  • Bratislava — a city of surprising beauty and charm, with a historic centre that rewards slow walking and a Christmas market that fills its oldest squares.
  • Vienna, one of the great cities of Europe — its sweeping boulevards, world-class museums, and legendary Christmas atmosphere making it a destination unlike any other.
  • The Wachau Valley — one of the most beautiful stretches of the Danube, with medieval villages, hilltop monasteries, and vineyards running down to the river’s edge.
  • Linz, a baroque city of nativity scenes, cobbled streets, and the famous Linzer Torte — Austria’s most beloved Christmas city after Vienna.
  • Passau, the City of Three Rivers, with its extraordinary baroque cathedral and one of the most atmospheric Christmas markets in Bavaria.'
  • Ten new Christmas ball designs by ARNE & CARLOS — one for each day of the programme — for ten days of festive knitting through the heart of European Christmas.
  • A final day in Munich at Hotel Louis, steps from one of Bavaria’s finest Christmas markets, ending with a farewell dinner together

ARNE & CARLOS

For fifteen years, the Christmas Balls have been part of how people celebrate. Knitters tell us they learned to knit with them. That they are addictive. That they appear on trees from Tokyo to Iowa, passed down, gifted, added to year after year. We believe all of it — because we understand exactly how it happens. We are, and have always been, completely in love with Christmas.

The balls began with an order for five hundred, placed by Comme des Garçons in 2008, to hang in their stores in Tokyo, London, Paris, and New York. When we saw them on sale at €80 each, we laughed — and then we had a better idea. We went home to Norway, redesigned them from scratch — knitted in the round, seamless, rooted in Nordic tradition — and wrote a book instead. Cappelen Damm published it on September 20th, 2010. It went straight to number one on Norway’s bestseller list, the first craft book ever to do so, and the rights sold in fifteen languages.

Five hundred balls. Fifty-five motifs. Fifteen years. We didn’t plan the fives — they were simply there.

55 Christmas Balls to Knit is our love letter to Christmas. This journey is the next chapter — ten new designs, one for each day, knitted along the river and through the cities that first inspired them. We will be with you every step of the way, in the season we love most.

Program

B = Breakfast L = Lunch D = Dinner
Please note the programme is subject to changes

Day 1 — Monday, November 30 — Budapest: Arrival
We arrive in Budapest independently and check in at Hotel Aria. The rest of the day is yours — to rest, to walk, to begin to feel the city.
This evening the hotel's wine and cheese reception runs from four until six, with live music — included for all guests. It is the perfect moment for the group to come together for the first time. We hand out the first of our ten Christmas ball patterns, cast on together, and let the journey begin.

Day 2 — Tuesday, December 1 — Budapest (B, D)
A full day in Budapest, and a day that begins with something unexpected.
We visit the Hungarian State Opera House — one of the most beautiful opera buildings in Europe, built in the 1880s and restored to extraordinary effect. Behind the public façade lie staircases, painted ceilings, and gilded interiors that tell the story of a city at the height of its confidence.
From there we make our way through the Jewish Quarter, one of Budapest's most characterful neighbourhoods — its streets lined with synagogues and buildings that carry their history visibly. A stop at Gerbeaud Café on Vörösmarty Square for refreshments — one of the most celebrated cafés in Central Europe and a Budapest institution since 1858. The square itself hosts one of Budapest's most beautiful Christmas markets, with handcrafted ornaments and the Basilica lit up behind it.
We continue by the Millennium Underground — the oldest metro in continental Europe — to Heroes' Square and Vajdahunyad Castle, a remarkable structure combining Romanesque, Gothic, and Baroque elements built for the city's millennial celebrations in 1896. Lunch in City Park.
This evening, dinner high above the city with views across the rooftops of Budapest.
And we knit ball number two.

Day 3 — Wednesday, December 2 — Budapest: Embarkation (B, L, D)
Our last morning at Hotel Aria begins with a visit to the Museum of Ethnography, one of Central Europe's great collections of folk art, textile traditions, and material culture. Hungarian embroidery, weaving, and costume are displayed here with quiet authority — for anyone who works with colour and pattern, it is a genuinely absorbing place.
Lunch at a Budapest institution where the pastry is made by hand and the fillings change with the season.
In the afternoon we board our Emerald Star-Ship. Budapest remains around us — the Chain Bridge, the Parliament, the Castle Hill — now seen from the water rather than the street. For those who want one last wander through the Christmas market on Vörösmarty Square before boarding, there is time.
This evening on board, a traditional Hungarian folklore show — music, dance, and a fitting welcome to life on the river.
Christmas ball number three.

Day 4 — Thursday, December 3 — Budapest (B, L, D)
We wake up on board, still in Budapest. This morning, a guided coach tour of the city takes us through some of its most celebrated landmarks — the grand boulevards of Pest, the castle district of Buda, and the sweeping views across the river that connect the two. Budapest is a city that rewards a second look, and this tour gives us one.
The afternoon is free — time to return to the Christmas market, explore a neighbourhood, or simply sit on deck and watch the city from the water. Good knitting time.
This evening the ship sails. Budapest slips away behind us as the Danube opens up ahead.
Ball number four.

Day 5 — Friday, December 4 — Bratislava (B, L, D)
We arrive in the Slovakian capital in the morning. Bratislava is a city that surprises people — compact, full of character, with a historic centre that has been accumulating layers since the Middle Ages. Our included walking tour moves through the old town at a measured pace, past the Old Town Hall, the Plague Column, and the narrow streets that lead toward the castle.
Bratislava's Christmas market fills the Main Square and Franciscan Square at the heart of the old town — one of the most intimate and atmospheric on the route, the stalls close together beneath the old town facades, the smell of trdelník and mulled wine drifting through the cold air. There is free time to wander it at your own pace.
We knit Christmas ball number five on board this evening.

Day 6 — Saturday, December 5 — Vienna (B, L, D)
Vienna asks to be taken seriously, and it rewards the effort. The Ringstrasse — that great boulevard of imperial architecture built by Franz Joseph in the second half of the 19th century — is one of the great urban sequences in Europe. At Christmas, the city adds another layer entirely.
Our included excursion takes us to the Kunsthistorisches Museum, the largest art museum in Austria and one of the most important collections in the world — Egyptian antiquities, Greek and Roman sculpture, and one of the finest collections of Old Master paintings anywhere. The afternoon is free to explore Vienna at your own pace. The Rathausmarkt in front of the grand Neo-Gothic City Hall is the largest and most spectacular of the city's many Christmas markets, while the more intimate Spittelberg market in the seventh district offers a quieter and more artisanal experience. Both are within easy reach.
Ball number six on board this evening.

Day 7 — Sunday, December 6 — Dürnstein and the Wachau Valley (B, L, D)
The Wachau Valley is one of the most beautiful stretches of the Danube — steep vineyards descending to the river, medieval villages tucked into the hillsides, ruined castles above. In December the vines are bare and the light is low and clear, and the valley has a stillness that is entirely its own.
Today we visit Göttweig Abbey, a Benedictine monastery founded in 1083 on a hill above the valley, visible from a great distance and commanding views that stretch across the Wachau in every direction. A community of around forty-five monks has been working these vineyards for centuries. This afternoon on board, a presentation on Christmas traditions across Europe.
The small villages of the Wachau — Dürnstein with its blue and white baroque church tower, Weissenkirchen with its fortified church above the river — have their own quiet Christmas traditions, with advent markets and candlelit windows that feel entirely removed from the larger cities.
Ball number seven.

Day 8 — Monday, December 7 — Linz (B, L, D)
Linz is Austria's third city and perhaps its least expected. Its baroque old town is quietly beautiful — wide squares, ornate facades, and at this time of year, hand-carved nativity scenes displayed in churches throughout the centre. Our walking tour moves through the old town at a calm pace, with time to look properly at what is there rather than simply pass through it.
Linz's Christmas market fills the Hauptplatz — the main square, one of the largest baroque squares in Austria — and spills into the surrounding streets. It is a genuine local market, less visited than Vienna or Salzburg, and all the more pleasant for it. The day ends with a tasting of Linzer Torte — the local speciality whose recipe is among the oldest documented in culinary history, a dense latticed pastry of spiced shortcrust and redcurrant jam that has been made in this city for centuries.
We knit christmas ball number eight this evening.

Day 9 — Tuesday, December 8 — Passau (B, L, D)
Passau sits at the confluence of three rivers — the Danube, the Inn, and the Ilz — on a narrow peninsula between them, its baroque buildings rising directly from the water. It is known as the City of Three Rivers, and seen from the ship as we approach, the geography is immediately clear and immediately dramatic.
Our guided tour moves through the historic centre — cobblestone streets, baroque facades, the smell of gingerbread in the cold air — to St. Stephen's Cathedral, home to one of the largest pipe organs in the world with over 17,000 pipes. The Christmas market in front of the cathedral is one of the most atmospheric on the route — small enough to feel intimate, set against the cathedral's baroque facade, with craft stalls and local Bavarian specialities. There is free time to explore it at your own pace.
This evening on board, a traditional Bavarian band performs. Ball number nine.

Day 10 — Wednesday, December 9 — Passau: Disembarkation and Munich (B)
After breakfast we say farewell to the ship and travel to Munich — a journey of just over two hours through the Bavarian countryside in December.
Our guide meets us at Odeonsplatz, and from there we walk through the city at an unhurried pace. The medieval market at Odeonsplatz is one of Munich's most characterful — smaller and quieter than the famous Christkindlmarkt at Marienplatz, with craft stalls and a warmth that feels genuinely local. A glass of Glühwein on arrival — available without alcohol for those who prefer. From there we continue to the Residenz, where one of the city's finest Christmas markets fills the courtyard of the former royal palace, and onward through Stachus and along Kaufingerstrasse to the Christkindlmarkt at Marienplatz, one of the oldest and most celebrated in Bavaria.
Along the way, we stop at a couple of small craft and artisan workshops — places not usually accessible to visitors, and a quietly memorable contrast to the markets outside.
Lunch in the heart of the old town.
We check in at Hotel Louis in the afternoon — the Viktualienmarkt Christmas market is directly outside the door. This evening, our farewell dinner together.
Ball number ten — the last of the journey, knitted in Munich.

Day 11 — Thursday, December 10 — Munich: Departure (B)
Breakfast at Hotel Louis. Check-out by midday, and then onward by individual arrangements — carrying with you ten Christmas balls and the memory of the markets, the river, and the dark December light of Central Europe.

MS Emerald Astra

Emerald Star-Ship — The Danube
The Emerald Star-Ships are purpose-built for the rivers of Central Europe — designed to navigate the Danube and dock in the heart of each city, which means the Christmas markets, the old towns and the cathedral squares are always just a few steps from the gangway. The ships carry up to 180 guests, a scale that allows for genuinely personal service and a quiet, unhurried atmosphere on board.
Cabins are light and well-proportioned, with windows that keep the river and its banks always present. Meals in the main restaurant are regionally inspired, with wines and soft drinks included. The sun deck runs the full length of the ship and offers uninterrupted views of the landscape as it passes — vineyards, monastery hilltops, medieval villages, and the slow wide bends of the river in winter light.
Life on board settles quickly into its own rhythm. There is always somewhere comfortable to sit, always something to look at through the glass, and always time — for knitting, for conversation, for doing nothing at all except watching the Danube go by.

Emerald Astra (2026-built) is the tenth vessel in the Emerald Waterways Star-class series. The deck plan of Emerald Astra shows 91 staterooms accommodating 180 passengers, served by 52 crew. Like most new European river cruise ships, she has 4 passenger decks and offers facilities such as an indoor swimming pool that transforms into a night cinema (with sliding glass roof), Bar Lounge, main Dining Restaurant, Gym, Spa (massage room), Beauty Salon, passenger-use bicycles, and 1 elevator (serving all 3 cabin decks).

As an all-inclusive riverboat, Emerald Astra’s cruise fares cover the following amenities:

  • gratuities (on board and on shore excursions/tours)
  • port taxes
  • all shore excursions
  • beverages (tea, coffee, soft drinks, bottled water) and alcohol by the glass at lunch and dinner (beer and wine)
  • Wi-Fi Internet access

There is no enforced dress code on board. However, a smart-casual style is recommended for dinner (jeans are acceptable, but shorts and flip-flops are not). Emerald Waterways cruises do not feature formal nights.

Cabins

Emerald Stateroom
Between 14m² and 16m²
Staterooms boast a spacious layout when it comes to European small ship river cruising. A picture window provides plenty of natural light, and your en-suite bathroom will be fully stocked with luxurious ESPA toiletries. Emerald staterooms are located on Riviera Deck (cat. D and E).

Emerald Panorama Balcony Suite
Between 15m² and 17m²
These chic suites are perfect for viewing the scenery pass by. The innovative all-weather balcony system allows the floor-to-ceiling window to drop down electronically and an indoor decked area allows you to enjoy the sights in all their glory. Emerald Panorame Balcony suites are located on Vista deck (cat. B and C) and Horizon deck (cat. A).

Hotels

Hotel Aria — Budapest
Hotel Aria sits in the heart of old Budapest, a few steps from St. Stephen’s Basilica and a short walk from the State Opera House. The building is designed entirely around music — each of its four wings dedicated to a different musical tradition, opera, jazz, classical and contemporary — and the effect is one of warmth and genuine character rather than theme-park decoration. Rooms are spacious and carefully considered, with natural materials and a calm that feels earned rather than manufactured. The lobby has the atmosphere of a concert hall in miniature. The service is attentive and personal in a way that larger hotels rarely manage.
For us, the choice of Hotel Aria for our Budapest days is fitting. Music and craft are not so different — both require patience, practice, and love. And this is a hotel that understands love for what it does. It is an excellent place to arrive, to settle, and to begin to feel the city before the river journey starts.

Hotel Louis — Munich
Hotel Louis stands directly on the Viktualienmarkt in the heart of Munich’s old town — one of the city’s most beloved daily markets, surrounded by centuries-old buildings and, in December, by one of the finest Christmas markets in Bavaria. The hotel opened in 2009 in a carefully restored building of over a hundred years, its architects finding a way to be contemporary without losing the character of the surroundings. Inside, the rooms are warm and precisely designed — handcrafted furniture in walnut and oak, natural stone, Italian fabrics, floors of oiled oak — a considered elegance that feels Bavarian in its quality and unhurried in its atmosphere.
The location is not incidental. Standing on the Viktualienmarkt with the Christmas market outside the window, Hotel Louis is exactly the right place to end this journey. After ten days on the river, moving through the markets and cities of the Danube, Munich is where we gather for the last time — for a final afternoon among the stalls, and a farewell dinner together in the evening.
