Welcome to ARNE&CARLOS’ Knitting under the Aurora Borealis!

It is with great pleasure we welcome you to Norway for our Norwegian classic tour - Knitting under the Aurora Borealis with ARNE & CARLOS! This eventful tour will take you to the capital Oslo for a two days pre cruise program, before taking the train over the scenic mountains westbound to Bergen, where the cruise starts and ends after the classic roundtrip along the coast. For this adventure we have chosen the best Norway has to offer, with first class hotel accommodation, most meals are included - and the Coastal Kitchen onboard MS Midnatsol will delight you!

October is a perfect month to do ‘the world’s most beautiful sea voyage’ - this is when it is possible to experience all seasons and colors during your trip! It is fascinating to see how the landscape and climate will change from the start of the voyage in Oslo, where autumn has started, the train ride over the mountains will be colorful and maybe with snow, and Bergen will most likely be rainy.... As we reach the Arctic the fjords will be surrounded by snowcapped mountains!

Above the Arctic Circle we can expect to see the Aurora Borealis - the mythical Northern Lights! They appear when solar particles collide with the Earth’s magnetic field. As the incoming particles collide with atoms and molecules of oxygen and nitrogen in the Earth’s upper atmosphere, they excite them to produce light – the light of the aurora. The Solar Maximum occurs halfway through the sun’s cycle. It is a time of intense solar activity – and dramatically more auroral displays. Scientists predict the Solar Maximum in 2024-25 will result in the most frequent and impressive Northern Lights in more than a decade. The next Solar Maximum after 2024-25 won’t be for another 11 years until 2036. So this is your chance!

During the tour you will enjoy the company of your hosts ARNE & CARLOS, attend their interesting lectures and take part in the exciting mystery knitalong! ARNE & CARLOS will join the group in Oslo, and will also take the train to Bergen with the group. The train journey is quite spectacular over the mountains and the scenery is beautiful. Bring a knitting project for the train journey!

Day 5        Ålesund (B, L, D)
In Ålesund the inhabitants claim this is Norway’s most beautiful town – and they could very well be right. The city is renowned for its stunning Art Nouveau architecture. The port call in Ålesund is a very short one in the morning for supplies and and on and off loading, before MS Midnatsol sails in the very scenic Hjørund fjord. The ship will stop just outside the tiny village of Urke and it will be possible to go ashore here in the ship's tender boats. MS Midnatsol returns to Ålesund again, and it will be possible to explore this charming town, we suggest by foot.

Day 6        Trondheim (B, L, D)
Trondheim was founded by Vikings in 997 AD. The most famous building here is Nidaros Cathedral built in Gothic style. Explore the city on your own or take part in one of Hurtigruten’s optional excursions (additional cost). After departure from Trondheim, join ARNE & CARLOS for an inspiring lecture in the ship’s conference room.

Day 7        Crossing the Arctic Circle - Bodø (B, L, D)
Today we cross the Arctic Circle! As we sail northwards the days get longer and it does not really get dark at night. During the call in Bodø you may want to join Hurtigruten’s excursion to Saltstraumen – the world’s most powerful maelstrom. We sail through the Lofoten archipelago towards the pretty fishing village Svolvær, for a late evening call.

Day 8        Tromsø (B, L, D)
Enjoy Norway’s beautiful coastal scenery as MS Midnatsol sails north, stopping at all together 34 ports, carrying not only passengers but mail and goods as well – this is a working ship with an interesting mix of locals and tourists. In the afternoon the ship will arrive in Tromsø, gateway to the Arctic and the largest city in Northern Norway – also called ‘Paris of the North’, because of its lively restaurant and bar scene.

Day 9        At the top of Norway – North Cape (B, L, D)
Arrival Honningsvåg - the portal to the North Cape, where a globe monument marks the top of Europe. The very popular excursion up to the dramatic promontory is included in this travel adventure!

Day 10        Kirkenes (B, L, D)
Kirkenes is the turning point for the northbound journey, the coastal express changes direction and head south. Kirkenes suffered severe damage during WWII bombings. Join the excursion and learn more about this interesting area – which is a melting pot with many different nationalities living together i harmany.

Day 11        At the top of Europe – Hammerfest (B, L, D)
Cruising southbound MS Midnatsol calls at Hammerfest which used to be the northernmost town in the world before Longyearbyen in Svalbard claimed the title. As the cruise continues south to Tromsø, you may glimpse views of the Lyngen Alps, which boast some of the highest peaks in all of Norway. In Tromsø you may attend a candlelit classical midnight concert at the Arctic Cathedral, an optional excursion arranged by Hurtigruten (additional cost).

Day 12        Lofoten Archipelago (B, L, D)
Today you will be exploring the Lofoten archipelago, a highlight of the scenic route. The birthplace of Hurtigruten Stokmarknes is a port of call where the Hurtigruten museum can be visited. The building resembles a ship in a bottle and chronicles the Hurtigruten legacy. If weather conditions permit the Captain may choose to take MS Midnatsol into the very narrow fjord, Trollfjorden. The mountain walls will look so close you will think you can reach out and touch them!

Day 13        Helgeland Coast – where the trolls live (B, L, D)
Admire the fascinating mountain range the Seven Sisters and see the hole passing straight through Torghatten mountain and learn about the myths and legends from the area. After lunch meet in the conference room for an interesting lecture by ARNE & CARLOS. How is the Mystery Knitalong going?

Day 14        Trondheim the Viking Capital - Kristiansund the Bacalao capital  (B, L, D)
Two important ‘capitals’ will be visited today – and if you missed attractions in Trondheim on the northbound journey, now is your chance to catch up. Hurtigruten offers an excursion to The Atlantic Road – ranked as the world’s best road trip by The Guardian.

Day 15        Fjord country and the home stretch to Bergen (B, L, D)
As MS Midnatsol takes us south towards Bergen, enjoy the stunning coastal scenery and fjord landscape, on our last day onboard.
